Meredith Whittaker, a Google employee organizer and cofounder of the AI Now Institute, told Forbes that the “GooglePayOutsForAll” social media effort is meant to highlight the trade-off Google made in prioritizing payouts to Singhal and Rubin.

“Imagine a world where we’re not paying sexual predators over $100 million dollars,” she said. “Where else could those resources go?”

Suggestions on Twitter included paying contractors, referred to as TVCs, for sick leave and reducing the opportunity gap for women of color (Google’s workforce, like that of many tech companies, is predominately white and male).

“We can see here that they have the money to meet our demands, they’re just spending it in the wrong place,” Whittaker said. “They can afford to do these things.”
