At AI Now, Sophie's work centers effort to support communities and policymakers to make the strongest possible interventions to protect communities from harms driven by the build out of AI Infrastructure.
Previously, they were a researcher at the Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) focused on the intersection of AI and workers where they built the Luddite Lab Resource Hub, a project designed to support unions, labor organizations, and organizers fighting AI and automation at work. Sophie has spent much of their career working at the intersection of technology and social justice. This work has included building a worker-centered AI policy agenda with the American labor movement, shepherding algorithmic accountability legislation in the US Senate, and organizing to combat algorithmic harms in marginalized communities.
They have a background as both an organizer and a software engineer. Sophie cut their teeth as a grassroots organizer in Philadelphia working on issues ranging from fighting predatory development to immigrant rights to labor rights to progressive politics. Prior to this, Sophie studied Computer Science at RIT and spent their early career as a software engineer and data scientist in both the public and private sectors working at institutions such as Google and the US Census Bureau.
