Working With and Against AI

A lightning talk from the Labor & Automation session of the 2017 Experts Workshop given by Karen Levy (Cornell University).

This talk looks at the widespread and well-publicized concern about massive job losses in the trucking sector from automation – it’s one of the first industries that seems to be at great risk. But rather than replacing the worker altogether, the incursion of AI into the truck cab is having a wholly different effect: it’s being used to monitor workers’ eyelids, heart rates, brain waves, and every behavior in which they engage. As a result, rather than displacement of human by machine, the way AI is felt in trucking now is as a visceral incursion into the worker himself – an intrusive hybridization of human and machine.
