Limited Vision: The Undersampled Majority

A lightning talk from the Bias & Inclusion session of the 2017 Experts Workshop given by Joy Buolamwini (Algorithmic Justice League at MIT Media Lab).

This talk looks at how advances in deep learning have galvanized tremendous gains in computer vision with applications spanning melanoma classification to automated facial analysis. However some of these gains have been measured by benchmark datasets that lack phenotype diversity especially in regards to skin type. Joy presents the Algorithmic Justice League’s latest findings on the intersectional representation in prolific datasets to highlight alarming yet addressable gaps.
