From Machine Ethics to Politics

A lightning talk from the Ethics & Governance session of the 2017 Experts Workshop given by Rob Sparrow (Monash University).

This talk looks at how discussions of “Ethical AI” suffer from an equivocation about the meaning of this key phrase. A proper understanding of the role that ethical concepts play in human lives suggests that the prospects for machines “doing ethics” remain remote. For the foreseeable future all the ethical work will be done by those designing these systems, which in turn suggests the politics of design should figure more centrally in debates about ethics and AI.
