Introducing the newest AI Now team members

Over the past year we have expanded from a team of 11 to a team 18. Please join us in welcoming some of our newest members to the team.

We’re thrilled to share that Amba Kak will join AI Now in October as the Director of Global Strategy and Programs. In this role, Amba will lead global policy engagement, partnerships, and programs related to AI Now’s international research agenda. Amba joins AI Now from her role as Policy Advisor at Mozilla, where she led the organization’s work in India and contributed to global policy fora on issues such as data protection, online content regulation, and network neutrality. Previously, Amba has worked at the National Institute of Public Finance & Policy, New Delhi where she provided advisory to government regulators on telecom policy. She has also been the Secretariat Coordinator for the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information, an advocacy network focused on transparency and accountability laws. Trained as a lawyer, Amba received her BA LLB (Hons) from the National University of Juridical Sciences in India. As a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, she has received a Masters in Law (BCL) and an MSc in Social Science of the Internet.

Deborah Raji will also join AI Now in October as a Technology Fellow in October 2019. Her work with Joy Buolamwini and the Algorithmic Justice League highlighting cases of bias in computer vision has been featured in the New York Times and the Washington Post, and won the Best Student Paper Award at the ACM/AAAI Conference for AI Ethics & Society. She also spent time as a research fellow at the Partnership on AI, formalizing documentation practice in Machine Learning through their ABOUT ML initiative. Deborah is a graduate of the Engineering Science program at the University of Toronto, where she majored in Robotics Engineering.

Over the summer, Alejandro Calcaño joined us as a Program Associate after consulting with the founding team on the first AI Now Symposium. Ale joins the operations team, focusing on event production and communications. Previously he worked as a Research, Design and Production Associate at Sunny Bates Associates. Alejandro received his BA in Media Studies from Vassar College.

Alex Butzbach joined AI Now as Executive Assistant supporting co-founder and co-director Kate Crawford. Prior to joining AI Now, he worked at Harvard University Information Technology, providing administrative and operational support in during organization-wide consolidation and relocation, and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, supporting speaking events and forums. He received his BA in Communications and Media Studies from Boston College.
